There are Many Ways to Fight Weeds! Lesson Plan. What do we do about weeds? Without any natural enemies, noxious weeds can easily outcompete native plants and take over whole landscapes. These weeds are tough and don't give up easily. In this lesson students will learn about many tools we use to stop the spread of noxious weeds. Students will also create skits to demonstrate integrated weed management and participate in a journaling activity to discover how they could be "Weed Warriors."

__________

Leafy Spurge Lesson Plan. If you're standing in a patch of leafy spurge in late summer, you might hear a popping or crackling sound. This is the plant's artillery ... Discover how leafy spurge spreads and how its biological control agent, spurge hawk moth, works to try to keep the plant in check. Can the spurge be contained? Students will participate in the to answer these questions.
Leafy Spurge Bonanza (50 minutes)
Create a Fantasy Plant (30 minutes).
Grades 4-8. Subjects: Art, Language Arts, Science, Mathematics.
__________

Dalmatian Toadflax Lesson Plan. Some weeds are covered in thorns or have sharp, spiky stems and some weeds have leaves that are gray and waxy, making them look just like weds But not ll weeds are ugly! Students will determine which plants are weeds and which are not. Students will also participate in hands-on investigation of plant parts and the function of each plant.
Not All Weeds Are Ugly (25 minutes)
Plant Parts Identificaton (45 minutes)
Grades 4-8. Subjects: Science, Language Arts
__________

Yellow Starthistle Lesson Plan. Look closely at the Yellow Starthistle -- the base of each flower is guarded by long, sharp spines that poke out in all directions. Seen from above, these spines look like the points of a star. Each spine is almost one inch long and as sharp as a sewing needle. That's starthistle's way of saying, Don't touch me! Students will take a closer look at this plant and other noxious weeds through back to back drawings. Students will also learn ore about plants and the plant life cycle through flower dissections.
Back to Back Observations (30 minutes)
Plant Life Cycle and Flower Dissection (40 minutes)
Grades 4-8. Subjects: Science, Art, Language Arts.
__________

Purple Loosestrife Lesson Plan. Purple loosestrife spreads rapidly through wetlands and quickly replaces native plants. Sooon nothing but loosestrife grows there. How do we control the spread of purple loose-strife? Students will examine the use of bio-controls to limit the spread of noxious weeds in a bio-control blast!
Bio-Control Blast! Discussion and Role Play (30 minutes)
Inspiring Insects - Collection and Observation (40 minutes)
Grades 4-8. Subjects: Science, Performing Arts, Language Arts.
__________

Saltcedar Lesson Plan. Once saltcedar takes over an area, it keeps other plants out by oozing salt from its leaves. Soon, birds, animals, and even insects are driven away to look for food elsewhere. How does this plant affect habitats and ecosystems? Students will examine the impacts of saltcedar and participate in a webbing activity to understand ecosystem dynamics when saltcedar invades the landscape.
Exploring Ecosystems - Discussion and Webbing (60 minutes)
Grades 4-8. Subjects: Science, Language Arts.
__________

Leafy Spurge and Spotted Knapweed Lesson Plans With Radio Plays. Twenty activities correspond with the CD and mp3 radio plays, The Meanest Flower That Blows! Each radio play builds on content from the one before it, setting the stage for the play that follows. One activity accompanies each 2 to 3 minute play. Ten plays are about Spotted Knapweed and its biological control insects. The ten remaining plays are about Leafy Spurge and its biological control insects. Written scripts for each play are available at Interesting Facts where you can listen to the plays online. Grades K-3. Subjects: Science, Language Arts, Mathematics, Geography, Literature.
