General Description

• Deciduous shrub
• Clumping, multistemmed form
• Grows to a height of 6’ and width of 7’

Leaves

• Opposite and simple, 2.5” - 4” long
• Bright green
Doubly toothed, with a rough appearance
Ribbed veins with a long pointed tip
Persist into fall, obvious lime green color

Flowers

• Terminal clusters
White, large four petaled flowers
• 4 large toothed sepals
• Blooms April - early June

Fruit

• Cluster of four black bead-like fruits
• Single seeded fruits
• Immature fruits are dark, reddish orange
• Appearing midsummer; ripening September - December

Habitat

• Meadows, roadsides, forest, edges, landscape
• Prefers full sun but can grow in full shade.
• Tolerates a wide range of soils and conditions, including salt and pollution
