KIDS IN ACTION INITIATIVE 2022

Introduction

With a focus on inclusive activities that are embedded in state and national science standards, Kids In Action: Going Wild With Science intends to engage kids and communities with scientists and practitioners in local and larger regional projects where they interact with insects, plants, native and non-native invasive species, wildlife, and water systems. These symbiotic partnerships allow students of all ages to partner with real scientists in the field; gathering, in personal journals, data that advances scientific knowledge while gaining a deeper understanding of educational science standards.

Kids In Action Initiative is broadening the landscape of our learning demonstration sites beyond Utah, in 2022, to Montana and Illinois. Our first workshop in June with Jack Creek Preserve Foundation (JCP) and Mary Sellars (JCP Conservation Education Director) brought 40 elementary students from Whitehall Schools to natural areas to learn about invasive plants and their biocontrol insects and what that means to the wildness that remains in Montana. Students focused on identification, journaling, and drawing plants in natural settings. Mary expressed the value of the workshop as it aligns with the Preserve mission to conserve wildlife, to educate the public about wildlife and its habitat. The Preserve is planning a spotted knapweed release site installation with youth and Montana's Biological Control of Weeds Coordination Project and the Whitehall Biological Control of Weeds Project on the Preserve within walking distance of the Preserve's Outdoor Education Center.

Also in June, the Sacajawea Audubon Society (SAS) / Indreland Audubon Wetland Preserve (IAWP) initiated a series of three workshops, with the first 2-day workshop on June 12-13, 2022, and the second on July 11-12.

The workshops included hands-on learning in the classroom about classical biological control of weeds, what invasive plants are currently a problem in Gallatin County, and the biological control insects that could help keep them in control and reduce the serious impacts of their presence.

The target audiences for these workshops include the Indreland Audubon Wetland Preserve — Busy Beavers Volunteers (70+ community volunteers ages 8-80); the SAS Board of Directors, community, and local and county commissioners. The third workshop is scheduled for August 12-13, 2022, with a focus on establishing the release site on the Indreland Audubon Wetland Preserve and initiating a monitoring protocol to measure the impact of the release site each year over time.

The third of three workshops is scheduled for August 12-13, 2022. Participants will experience "hands-on" learning about the natural enemies of invasive plants (weeds) in the Bozeman, Montana area during the classroom workshop on Friday, August 12 from 12:00 noon - 1:30 pm at the Gallatin County Extension Fairgrounds Building #3. Participants will assist with establishing a permanent biocontrol insect release site for spotted knapweed biocontrol insects on the Indreland Audubon Wetland Preserve on Saturday, August 13 from 10 am - 1 pm. Participants will take away a strong understanding of invasive plants at the Preserve and the insect biocontrol approved for release by the SUDA APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine for controlling spotted knapweed. Participants will also learn more about the role of weed biocontrol insects as part of the Sacajawea Audubon Society/Indreland Audubon Wetland Preserve integrated vegetation and conservation management plan.
