Introduction Step Two
Section One. Biocontrol Basics - Curriculum and lesson plans
Navigating the Biocontrol In Your Backyard portal
Introduction Step Two.
In Step One, you learned how to access four youth education programs and their gateways to lessons and resources. In Step Two, you will learn how to access lessons plans and curriculum for activities that can help you teach to your State core curricular requirements by subject, skill sets, concepts, and objectives.
Brief Overview. In the Problem With Weeds page in the Bugs With An Attitude Gateway, you learned about how weeds are spread and some ideas about why we should care. But, what if weeds did not spread. What if we protected the areas we visit by changing our behaviors that spread weeds? In this lesson, Step Two, you will navigate to the Biocontrol Curriculum access point to learn another reason why we might want to stop weed spread. You will learn skill sets to locate, within the portal, engaging activities for teaching and learning subjects like history and a changing landscape associated with weed spread. Taking action to stop weed spread is the subject of service learning. Service learning and how to customize your biocontrol lesson plans for natural areas that you care for is the topic of Section Three. Later in Section Three, you will build on the skills you are learning in Step Two.
Step Two.
In this step you will learn how to find lesson plans and elements to include in your teaching or learning. You will learn how to search for these elements by subject, skills, concepts, and objectives.
Task #2a. From the Biocontrol In Your Backyard button at the bottom of the page navigate to the Home Page.
Task #2b. From the Home Page click the Lesson button to go to the biological weed control curriculum main page. Note that the Lesson button on the Home Page is the only Lesson button that goes directly to the Biocontrol Curriculum main page.
Task #2c. Note that you can at any time return to the Biocontrol In Your Backyard Home Page by clicking the banner at the top or the button on the bottom of the page.
Task #2d. You can search for lesson plans that are available in the portal by features: subject, skills, concepts, or objectives. We will learn later in Section Two how to use these lesson plans and adapt the activities to help you begin thinking about adapting them to meet your State core curricular requirements. For now, click on the Subjects button or the words below, Core Subjects.

Clicking the blue text will take you to a series of lesson plans that expand upon changing landscapes beyond the Biocontrol Curriculum access point. Explore Your World With Lewis and Clark is located within the Whats In Your World Gateway. You learned in Step One how to navigate using the program banner at the top of the page or the icon at the bottom of the page to return to the program main page; scrolling to the bottom to return to the Biocontrol In Your Backyard Home Page when needed. This is an example of the seamless integration the portal provides for four unique programs for the teaching and learning of biological control of native and non-native invasive plants. You will learn in Step Three how to access independent media such as Montana artist Don Greytak's native and non-native plant pencil drawings associated with the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trails visitor sites.
Task #2g. Note that the second History Subject is Leafy Spurge and Spotted Knapweed Lesson Plans With Radio Plays.
