Idaho Student Bug Crew
Sixty-four (64) weeds are listed as noxious in Idaho.
Noxious weeds are divided into three categories:
- Control
- Contain
- Early Detection, Rapid Response
The Early Detection, Rapid Response category weeds are targeted for eradication.
Control and Contain category weeds can employ a variety of weed control strategies.
Biological weed control is successful in Idaho to control and contain eighteen (18) species.
That said, each situation allows the employment of all available tools when appropriate.
Idaho's Cooperative Weed Management Areas coordinate efforts in more than 95% of the state.
Together with the Idaho Weed Awareness Campaign, weed issues are brought to the forefront.
Idaho student bug crews do more than manage noxious weeds with biocontrol insects and pathogens. They work with data to determine risk and assess weed population trajectories over time. As this section develops, you will find statistics, media clips, and case studies of student engagement with private landowners and government to make a difference in their communities. You will come to understand the professional development, as public speakers and decision makers, that is an important benefit of student bug crew employment.
