Help:Requesting Permission

From Bugwoodwiki

How do I request permission to use and image I find in the BugwoodWiki?

The images in the BugwoodWiki are taken from the Bugwood Image Database. Permission to use the images is dependent on how the image will be used.

Personal Usage

Personal use is allowed for all of the images and articles on this site. Personal use refers to using images where they will not be put on display for public education, advertising, amusement, or other purpose. Examples of this include:

  • a private collection of images for your screen saver
  • a print for decoration in your own house
  • creating a decal for a t-shirt that you plan to wear.

Educational Usage

When used for an educational purpose, all of the images and articles on this site may be used as long as the works are properly cited. Educational use is most often associated with non-profit organizations. To qualify as educational use the end product must:

  • be distributed free of charge
or
  • be a one-time educational article in a daily/weekly periodical (newspaper/magazine)

The intent of allowing the images and articles to be used in educational publications is to better provide information to the public. Use of an image or article in way that advertises a company, and its services or products should be considered commercial.

A commercial company may qualify for educational usage when hired by a non-profit organization to produce an educational materials that are distributed free of charge. An example of this is a publishing company being hired by a city to produce pamphlets on an exotic pest when they will be available to the public free of charge.

If you are not 100% sure that the use is purely educational, it is best to consider it a commercial project and follow those guidelines.

If you wish to use an image outside of the wiki article it is found in, you can click on the image to see the detailed information about that image and access the tool to batch download images known as the Light Box.

Commercial Usage

Commercial use includes any product that is not distributed free of charge. This includes products by non-profit organizations that are sold at cost or used to raise funds even if the product is meant to provide education. It also includes advertisements or materials used to market products or services.

Bugwood archives contain images and articles from a wide variety of contributors. Each author retains all rights to their works. Consequently, it is necessary to request permission to use each image or article used for commercial purposes. It is the author's decision to charge a fee or allow free use. If permission is granted, everything must still be properly cited when it is used.

To contact a photographer about using an image outside of the wiki article, click on the image and use the Light Box feature on the image detail page. This will collect the information needed by the photographer to process the request. Requests for articles can be made by either contacting the Bugwood Network Staff or contacting the author through their Talk page on the site.
