BugwoodIDS:Classifying images

From BugwoodWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The classifications used in BugwoodIDS are applied to specific images. The design of the system is based on the premise that the photographer took the image to illustrate a particular point. It is true that one image could be interpreted in many ways. For instance, images of onion fields in Peru may have a mountain or clouds in the background, but the purpose of the image was to show what onion fields in Peru look like! We aim to capture the photographer's intent rather than all possible meanings.

A great deal of searchability for images is created when combining the Subject, Host, Domain and Area applied to a specific image. Other fields used to classify images include Descriptor, Gender, Image type, View and various Location details. Author comments are displayed to the right of the entry form to allow the Bugwood Network Staff to see the information provided by the contributor.

BugwoodIDS also has a couple of ways to group subjects together (rather than classification on an image by image basis.

  • Division and Category are used to group subjects by traits that are shared such as being a certain type of disease or a plant having a certain growth habit.
  • For arbitrary lists such as organization pest lists a list of the subject numbers for the species of interest are stored in the database. This option allows users to create virtually any custom listing that will fit their needs. Two such projects that we have worked on recently are the SPDN Species of Concern and the Widely Prevalent Fungi list.
