12-40 mm. Palaearctic species. Found from late spring until October. Larvae develop in conifers (Pinus, Picea, Larix and Abies), rarely in broad-leaved trees (Populus, Fraxinus), and usually for 3 years. The ovipositing female inject the fungus Amylostereum areolatum into the stem, which decays the wood and provides a food source for the developing larvae. The larvae feed close to the surface at first, and later bore deeper. The presence of the larvae is often indicated by resin flow. Present in Hungary, mainly found in mountainous and hilly regions.
