12-15 mm. Develops for two years. Foodplants are the alders (Alnus species). Flies in May-June. The female lays her eggs on or below the base of the trees. The dirty white caterpillar feeds inside the trunk of both young and older trees. The young trees are often killed by the attack. Widespread in Europe, and not uncommon in Hungary.
