13-14 mm. Univoltine, flies from May to July. Females lay their eggs on the bark of branches and shoots of Picea and Larix. Larvae feed in the bark and the cambium, sometimes killing the branch. The fully-grown larva is 6-7 mm. The presence of larvae is indicated by small piles of frass and resin flow. Prefers the younger (5-15 years) trees. Widespread in Europe and also common in Hungary.
