Wingspan is ca. 60-90 mm. Occurs in Europe, West-Asia and North Africa. Develops for two years. Polyphagous, feeding on most broad-leaved trees, including hardwoods. The females lay eggs in groups of 15-20 at the base of older stems. The larvae feed inside the stem, and overwinter twice. They eject the frass from the tunnels, and it can be found in piles at the base of the stem. The fully-grown larva can reach 10 cm in length. They pupate either inside or outside the stem. The larvae are generally unnoticed, but can be seen in autumn as they search for pupation sites outside the stem. Common and widespread everywhere in Hungary, occasionally causing severe damage.
