En: Poplar hornet clearwing

Wingspan is 28-33 mm for males and 34-40 mm for females. Develops for two years. Main foodplants are poplars (Populus), can develop in both thin and thick trunks of most cultivated poplars. Can occasionally develop in willow, lime and birch. Flies from early May until Late August. Oviposits close to the base of the stem. The caterpillars feed inside the trunk. Their presence is indicated by the piles of wood chips and frass at the base of the trees (as for Anaerea carcharias). Widespread in Europe and also common in Hungary. Causes serious damage in some places.
