Occurrence: It is common in the north and central Europe, Siberia, Korea, Mongolia, Japan and the northern parts of China and Sakhalin Island.
Host plants: Conifers. In Poland, it occurs mainly on the Scots pine and Norway spruce, but also on some exotic species like the eastern white pine, Sitka and silver spruce.
Morphology: Adults are 5-8 mm long, reddish brown or brown. Pronotum is with a sharp spine on both sides. Elytrae are with 3 parallel ridges. Elytrae are with the white oblique stripe and tuffs of black hair on inner ridges. The egg is white, elongated, of 1.2x0.4 mm in size. The larva is white, up to 12 mm long, covered with rare short hair. The pupa is 7-8 mm long.
Biology: Adults are active from late-April through late-July. They are observed on breeding material. Females lay single eggs. Larvae feed in cambium on branches and the thin part of stems. Their galleries are kurved with sharp edges, up to 5 mm wide. Galleries are filled with brown and white chips and shredded wood and bark. At the end of development, larvae enter the wood, and about 5 cm in depth they construct pupal chambers of 11x5 mm in size. Pupation occurs in autumn, and emerged adults overwinter in pupal chambers. This species has one generation per 1 or 2 years, depending on the climatic conditions.
Damage: P. fasciculatus infests weakened young trees or twigs, branches or tops (1-10 cm in diameter) of old trees. Branches in the lower part of crowns are attacked the most often, leading to faster cleaning up of tree stems. However it can also cause a significant damage in young, 5-15 year old plantations.
Preventive measures and control: Removal and burning of infested trees in young plantations or regenerations.
