Pest

Leaf beetle, Octotoma plicatula (Fab.); a black, wedge-shaped beetle 4 to 5 mm long, with a distinctive, irregular design of ridges on its wing covers; adults are active from early May through August.

Injury

Long, narrow patches of epidermis about 2 mm wide and 4 to 10 mm long are eaten from the undersides of leaves. Heavily damage leaves turn brown and drop prematurely in late summer.
